Today in class we watched a film on Louise Bourgeois. The film reflected on her professional life as a sculptor and how it interrelates with her personal life. She is a feisty old woman, I found her very interesting. At one point she said something that I really liked about being an artist. She said: "The artist has this gift of being connected with their unconscious - and this is the definition of sanity..." It's funny because often as an artist you are thought of as insane. Or you think of yourself as insane because often you are removed from societal norms. Being in touch with your unconscious means dealing with some really heavy things about yourself. That is a humbling statement to me, that she made - that going deep inside of one's self is actually sane.
